Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association 5375 W. 7th St., Topeka, KS 66606.

Mellie was born on December 16, 1939, in Raymondville, Texas, to Esequiel and Becenta (Lopez) Marroquin. As a young woman, she met and fell in love with Thomas E. Shawler. They were wed on October 2, 1965 at the First Southern Baptist Church of Wichita, Kansas. She and her small family traveled to many duty stations with Thomas. They ultimately settled in Junction City, Kansas, where they since called their home.

Mellie was a natural mother. She was an adoring mother to her children and to the children she cared for through her jobs in the day care, child care, and in her retirement. She also passed on her strong Christian values as a teacher at Sunday school at the churches she attended and at the Junction City Church of the Nazarene in the "Benson Buddies" program. She was a devoted wife to her husband Thomas who also taught Sunday school. On her off time, she enjoyed crocheting, but her true passion was gardening. Mellie was an avid gardener. Her talent was reflected in her garden spaces. The fruits of her labor spanned all around the home.

She will be dearly missed.

Mellie is survived by her loving family: husband Thomas of the home; her daughter, Victoria "Vikki" and husband Gary E. Spearow; two Grandsons, Brandon and Dylan Spearow; two brothers, Joe and wife Kathryn Marroquin and Ramon Marroquin and his wife Laurie; and a host of loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son Thomas, her parents, and her brother, Juan Marroquin.
